Remove roundabouts in Nairobi….replace them with????

One of the biggest stories this week was the Nairobi Governor Evan’s Kidero walked when his motorcade was caught in traffic. Clearly this was big news, very big news since as governor never walks anywhere. And his motorcade bullies the rest of us out of traffic daily. I think the governor should consider getting a nduthi guy, or as the uptown guys call them a boda boda guy to get him to the meeting on time. Mr Governor, the rest of us have to deal with the traffic and that’s how traffic in Nairobi is.

Now the idea of removing roundabouts, is a good idea, only if you have overpasses. This idea of replacing roundabouts with cross junctions, is a bad idea Mr Governor. If you don’t believe us please ask your counterparts in the US. I believe you should have a conversation with Mayor’s of major cities in the US. Anyway on to much better more positive news….

Who exactly are the Kenyan middle class?

A few weeks ago i was having an interesting discussion with a group of friends about the Kenyan middle class. Much of the discussion was drawn from this particular article that had appeared in the Daily Nation some weeks back which had attempted to explain who the Kenyan middle class is. The link to the article is as below

I had big issues with the article, due to the classification of who we consider to be middle class. In advertising we would classify the Obure interviewed for the story as upper class or an A when you look at it from a social economic class classification. Unfortunately classification of a target audience using social economic class only took into consideration the income of the primary bread winner especially when households now have multiple incomes.The social economic classes were A, B, C1, C2, D, E.

Clearly using the social economic classes method of audience classification was not going to work especially with the growth in population and the rise of advertising in Kenya. So the Kenya Audience Research Foundation was formed and from around 2008, the Living Standard Measure (LSM) method of audience classification was introduced. LSM is a way of segmenting people based on their access to, and use of a wide range of products and services. A composite index is derived from a range of variables (products& services) that sum up the consumption and affordability status (and hence the living standard) of an individual. LSMs are a measure of affluence & development.

LSM explained

So a look at LSM shows that the middle class range from LSM 7-12 and that would range from upper to lower middle class. According to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics, the Kenyan middle class can be defined as anyone spending between Sh23,670 and Sh 199,999 per month. Africa Development Bank however classifies the middle class as anybody with an annual income exceeding Sh331,500 ($3,900) or who spends between Sh170 ($2) and Sh1,700 ($20) a day.

I am more inclined to go with the with the Kenya bureau of Standards classification for the Kenyan scenario meaning that the guy interviewed in the Nation article is actually upper class by Kenyan standards. I would actually say that Obure is LSM 14 -15. As explained by the future capital blog an understanding of the middle class is very critical as they are the engine of growth in any economy. How the will influence the upcoming elections though, is yet to be seen…

Early Bird Service from Toyota East Africa Limited

So today Toyota East Africa Limited launched a new service where you can get your car serviced in the morning between 6.30 and 8.30 at their Uhuru Highway premises. Christened the Early bird Service your car is serviced as you wait and you can chill at their lounge, watch International news, read the paper and have a morning cup of coffee. Sounds like a very good idea to me…

Consolidated bank rebrands


4th June 2010, Nairobi, Kenya……. After 20 years in the market, Consolidated Bank of Kenya today unveiled its new identity in an event that saw the bank don a fresh modern look in line with its innovative product offering. The rebranding reflects the Banks growth, transformation and commitment to delivering a unique retail experience to all its customers.

The new logo and brand proposition which were launched at the Hilton Hotel Nairobi resonates with the banks’ planned transformation in terms of technology, people, processes and channels outlined in the Banks’ five year strategic plan.

Speaking about the bank’s new identity, the Central Bank of Kenya Governor, Professor Njuguna Ndung’u who was the Guest of Honour at the event said, “For a bank whose history is marked by a series of remarkable achievements in the face of unprecedented challenges, today’s launch is an important step in Consolidated Bank’s journey. It is guaranteed to position this rapidly growing bank ahead of the game in an increasingly competitive and dynamic environment,” he said. “We applaud Consolidated Bank for this bold and strategic move.”

The rebranding exercise is expected to boost the Banks’ rising profitability which increased by 37% in the face of increased competition and slow economic growth. In 2009 Consolidated Bank recorded a pre-tax profit of Ksh.116 Million against Ksh.84 Million in the past year. The growth, especially in loans and advances is clear testimony that the bank’s focus on the SME segment is indeed bearing fruit.

Mr. David Ndegwa Wachira, Consolidated Bank’s Chief Executive said, “Our enhanced brand identity is a sign of my team’s commitment to excellence, above par service delivery and incremental growth arising from dedication to serve our customers and stakeholders better.”

Ladies and Gentlemen

May I say what a great pleasure it is for me to address such a distinguished audience on this occasion of the official unveiling of the Consolidated Bank’s new identity.

Today is a historic day when the Bank is marking the start of a new journey.

Twenty years ago, when the institution was formed, there were unprecedented challenges. There had previously not been a body of its nature, formed from an amalgamation of several financial institutions. The formative years were especially challenging for staff and management.

In the year 2000, having recovered a substantial percentage of the inherited bad debt, Consolidated Bank became a Commercial Bank. And I daresay we have never looked back since then!

Our journey leading to this moment has been filled with achievements as well as challenges. We have remained profitable for the last 5 years, each year reporting a higher growth in profits. Despite the unstable economic environment especially over the past couple of years, we have consistently continued to grow our balance sheet and revenues.

The growth we have experienced so far has been a direct consequence of the enormous support we have received. First from our customers who have been steadfast in their choice of us as their Banking partner. And then from our shareholders who are with us today. With this support, the directors and staff of the Bank have been able to steer the Bank.

At this juncture, please allow me to recognise our directors. May I kindly request the board members to stand where they are. Ladies and gentlemen – this is the board of directors who have dedicated time and effort to steering the Bank this far. Thank you.

Last year, as we were preparing our next 5 year strategic plan, we came to the realisation that this Bank has immense potential to create an impact in the economy especially through support to the SME sector. Our focus on SMEs has borne fruits as illustrated by the evident growth experienced by many of our customers. We are gratified to acknowledge that through our flexible and convenient financial solutions, business people around the country are contributing substantially to the economy.

And now, we are literally on the verge of a new era for the Bank. We anticipate rapid expansion not just of our network but of the business as a whole.

We have prepared well for this planned growth. In addition to investing in relevant products, we have invested heavily in our operational and risk framework e.g. the Business Process Improvement project. Most importantly, we have been investing in developing our staff through training coaching programmes.

Our customers will be glad to know that in preparation for the launch of our new brand identity, we have undertaken a very comprehensive training course where every single staff member attended a 3 day intensive training session.

Our new brand identity therefore is not the main change in itself. Our new look is indeed fresher, modern and will resonate with our customers better. However, this is really an outward change that signifies deeper inward transformation. We are reaffirming our commitment to our customers and stakeholders to support them achieve success.

I am supremely confident that our Board, management and staff are fully capable to deliver on this brand promise.

We pledge to continue growing with you into the future.

To the Makmende fans, we’d like to thank you all very much! All this fuss is because all of you really got into the character and had fun with it. Thank you. Seeing as there has been a lot of discussion about us, Makmende and what we are going to do now that the Ha-He video concept has spun off into something massive, we’d like to set a few things straight:

A. Copyright

We (Just A Band) have obtained the sole rights to the Makmende character likenesses (the characters being Makmende, Britannia Zimeisha, First Bodi, Big-G, Wrong Number, The Askyua Matha Black Militants, Black Sahara, Godfrey and the Laydayz, Abscondita and Taste of Daynjah), “Nyoyo na Uji Films”, “Deluxe Nyeuthi”, “Finger of Nebula”, the “Makmende Amerudi” lettering and images thereof.

This means that any copying or reproduction of any of the above characters FOR COMMERCIAL PURPOSES without permission is prohibited by law. Violators will be subject to criminal and/or civil action.

WE HAVE NOT – as has been speculated – copyrighted/trademarked the word “Makmende”. We did not create that name ourselves, it has existed in Kenyan popular culture for a long time. Our copyright covers our representation of Makmende and the other characters/brand names in the video.

Having said that, we love fan-generated artwork, as long as it’s not for commercial purposes. We’d like to send a special shout-out to the authors/creators of the Primary Makmendetics photo, and the 10,000 bob note and many other very cool pieces. Awesomeness!

B. Kevin “K1” Maina

Kevin is our good friend, he helped us bring the character of Makmende to life, and we couldn’t have done this video without his help. At the moment, Kevin “K1” Maina is not making any public appearances as Makmende. Be kind to him.
